Colour of the month Sky Blue - May 2018

There’s ever so much more to blue. Than just a color It’s as much an emotion. As it is a hue.
— Extract from Ode To The Color Blue - Poem by David Whalen

Colour of the month for May: Sky Blue

With teasing bursts of sun and the feeling of a heat wave arriving in London, the clouds roll in, and the brief hope of summer disappears but leaves us with a tantalising glimpse of clear beautiful blue skies. Inspiring us with memories of bright days and coastal locations, sky blue is a gentle colour that calms our minds and souls, and is a favourite colour for many people.

Using sky blue in your home adds light and a feeling of freshness to interiors and creates a tranquil atmosphere. It is a colour you can use touches of throughout the house, or to create your own mini oasis in one room. Add contemporary ombre or ocean wave marble wallpaper, or for a more nostalgic vintage feel, opt for whimsical wallpaper with stylised ornamental koi carp swimming in a pool.

For a beach house feel, mix modern with distressed and faded classic Jacquard rugs in varying shades of blue on an unpolished wooden floor. Add sprinklings of sky blue glass throughout the home either in the form of vases, lightly glazed coffee mugs, bowls or plates.

For ceiling lights, hand blown glass pendant lighting or jewelled chandeliers dripping with sky blue crystal glass will produce a magical environment. Pashmina throws in solid colours, cushions in bleached out blue denim or simple solid textures add fresh accents to any room.  Subway tiles with reflective surfaces used in your bathroom or shower room will create a spa-like mood.

Adorn walls with enlarged, unframed and mounted vintage German maps. For a more classic look, go with reproduction paintings in blues by JMW Turner, James Morrison or Edward Steichen, and for a modern mood, David Hockney's pool paintings add interest to any space.

Move away from the darks and into the light with Sky Blue.
